The latest information on the overhaul of 45133
45133 returned home to the Midland Railway - Butterley on Tuesday 7th November 2017.
The loco was shunted into 'C' Bay at Swanwick on 3rd December 2017 for stripping of components to commence and is expected to be out of service until at least 2020, whilst attention is given to the engine, generator, electrical machines, bogies and bodywork.
The overhaul is being completed through a combination of work contracted out to Pioneer Diesels Ltd (PDL) and our own volunteer labour.
Work so far has concentrated on stripping of the No.2 nose end. The traction motor blower and compressor from this end, along with the triple pump and vacuum exhauster from the engine room, were sent away to Bowers Electricals in Heanor for overhaul. Areas vacated by these components have been cleaned, repaired and repainted. 45133 was shunted from 'C' Bay at Swanwick into the Diesel Shed on Friday 3rd August 2018. With the loco now in a weather proof workshop, restoration can press ahead on items where keeping dry is essential!
With the overhauled traction motor blower and compressor reinstalled in the No.2 end nose, the nose front was refitted on 10th October 2018, as shown in the photo above (courtesy of Mike Jacob). A great deal of filling and sanding is required to prepare the nose for repainting. When the nose end is completed, work is due to start on the power unit.
