The latest information on the overhaul of 45133
NOTE: A plan for completion of the final overhaul tasks has been formulated, with a target for the locomotive to move under its own power in 2026. However, this is very much a target date and is dependent on sufficient volunteer hours being available, along with continued financial support. It is also dependent on no major setbacks being encountered during the re-commissioning stages.
Update July 2026: Further engine testing has been carried out. The temperature of the engine has been gradually increased in stages, culminating with a 30 minute run at half power engine speed. At this stage the engine reached normal operating coolant temperature and the cooling fan cut in. Inspections of the crankcase during and after testing revealed nothing untoward visibly. The bearing temperature was also checked with a thermal imaging device and all were within a close range. Inevitably there have been some fluid leaks to deal with, but nothing major. The main generator field circuits have been checked for correct polarity and the generator and traction motors have had ‘megger’ insulation tests carried out. The motor results were no worse than the last tests 10 years ago and the generator itself is much better than pre-overhaul. The traction motor isolating links have now been re-instated in preparation for testing the loco taking power. In early June, Pioneer Diesels removed the 8 air receivers from under the battery boxes, so they could be sent away for shot blasting, testing and repainting. These are due to be refitted in August.
